Best food to carry while travelling with children

Food is a major concern while travelling with small children .Upset tummy can be a major problem during travels. One can’t rely on outside food. So home-cooked snacks and meals are the best.


While packing snacks keep in mind to pack child’s favourite snacks, else it will be difficult to make him/her eat. Finger food like frams, puffed rice, banana cake, fruits like grapes etc which the child can eat on his own is the best for travel.  Here are a few snacks which I believe any child would prefer-

  • Frams
  • Puffed rice
  • Roasted Foxnuts and groundnut
  • Home-made
  • cake
  • Trail mix (cranberry, almonds,raisins,gems)

I am really grateful that my kid was fond of fruits and raw salads veggies. So, half of my problem regarding snacks was solved while travelling. So banana, cucumber, grapes, orange were my go to food during travels. This kept his stomach too in good shape.  One must inculcate the habit of eating fruits to children from young days.


I used to carry water from home, however I would also give him clean drinking water from water filters kept in railway restrooms etc as exposure to such water will boost immunity. Pl do not do it if your doctor has advised not to. I would carry hot water in flasks for train and car journey, in flights you can request for it so no need to carry them.


My preferred meals included

  • carom seed (ajwain) paratha -Ajwain is good for digestion too.
  • Lemon rice – It last long
  • Mini fried idlis – tasty as well as not messy.
  • Homemade porridge –it included roasted oats, almonds and ragi powder  .Roast and grind them. Keep it in air tight container. Add boiling water when you have to feed.

Special foods

My child was allergic to cow milk so I would carry soy milk small tetra pack. You must pack essential foods like these in case your child has food allergies.

It’s better to carry deposable wooden bowls and spoon. Also carry a straw; it comes very handy for child to drink.

Avoid making your child eat before car journeys, he might burp it out.

A well fed child is a happy child and a happy child can be your best travel partner.
